The Blessing of the Animals
Each year, the grounds of Mission San Luis Rey come alive with wagging tails, happy greetings, music, and the joyful sounds of our community gathering together for a beloved Franciscan tradition: The Blessing of the Animals.

Held in celebration of the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals and the environment, this special event invites people of all ages to bring their beloved pets to Mission San Luis Rey for a blessing and a day of celebration. This year is especially meaningful as we continue to honor the 800th anniversary of the passing of St. Francis, making the occasion an opportunity to reflect on his enduring message of compassion, peace, and care for all of creation.

Following in the Footsteps of St. Francis

St. Francis of Assisi is remembered for his profound love of God’s creation. He recognized the beauty and dignity of all living things and often referred to animals as his brothers and sisters. His famous Canticle of the Creatures praises God through the sun, moon, water, earth, and every living creature. For St. Francis,
caring for creation was an expression of faith. His example reminds us that our relationship with animals and the natural world can teach us important lessons about kindness, gratitude, humility, and responsibility.
The Blessing of the Animals at Mission San Luis Rey carries this Franciscan spirit forward. As families gather with their dogs, cats, birds,
rabbits, and other cherished companions, the blessing becomes more than a tradition— it is a celebration of the special bond between
people and the animals who bring so much love and joy into our lives.

A Celebration for the Whole Community
The Blessing of the Animals is a joyful community event where families, friends, pet lovers, and visitors can come together to celebrate. The event will feature the traditional blessing of the animals, along with music, vendors, and activities for the community to enjoy. Guests are encouraged to explore the historic grounds of Mission San Luis Rey, spend time with friends and neighbors, and experience the welcoming spirit that makes this annual celebration so special. The enthusiasm and love shown by the community demonstrated just how meaningful this Franciscan tradition has become.

A Special Year of Celebration
The 2026 celebration holds special significance as we commemorate the 800th anniversary of St. Francis’ passing. Throughout this Jubilee year, the Franciscan community is reflecting on the life and legacy of a man whose message continues to inspire people around the world.
Eight centuries later, St. Francis’ call to live peacefully, care for creation, and recognize our connection to one another remains remarkably relevant. Bringing our animals together for a blessing offers a beautiful and simple way to put those values into practice.
