Gardens

There are acres of gardens, with unique horticulture and hiking trails on our 56 acres.

The Well House

The Well House built in 1815 is located in the courtyard quad. Originally, the quadrangle measured nearly five hundred square yards.

During early mission history bull fights took place in this arena.

Arch

California's first pepper tree, planted in 1830 can be seen through the original adobe arch.

Sailors brought the seeds from Peru. The trees, schinus molle produced red berries known as peppercorns used in cooking.

Old Tree

The trunk of the tree measures 44 feet in diameter. It is the oldest tree on the mission property.

The tree limbs, now supported with braces provide a majestic shade and a sense of history.

Lavanderia Stairwell

In this sunken garden, Indians washed their clothes. Water spouted forth from gargoyles, passing through tile pools.

The Sacred Garden is located by the Retreat Center Conference Rooms and is a quiet place for reflection and meditation.

Sacred Garden

The Rose Garden is located at the south end of the quad. Beautiful roses bloom throughout the season.

Mission San Luis Rey is grateful to the many volunteers and patrons who help to support the loving care of our gardens. We welcome all contributions and invite you to become a Friend of the Mission.

Inspirational Thought

Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.
